THE ARTIST:
Aligi Sassu (1912-2000), a famous Italian painter, often painted horses because he considered them a symbol of strength, vital energy, freedom and power. From a young age, Sassu was fascinated by horses, which became one of the central themes of his artistic production. These animals, represented in dynamic and powerful poses, reflected his interest in movement, action and vitality.

For Sassu, the horse was also a symbol of rebellion and inner strength, linked to the social struggles and tensions that characterized the historical and political context of his time. His equestrian figures embodied not only a formal and plastic beauty, but also a profound expressive charge, often associated with a heroic and mythical dimension.

Sassu was also influenced by the historical and classical Italian tradition, in which the horse had a central role, from Giotto to Paolo Uccello. However, his horses, stylized and sometimes almost abstract, reflected a modern and personal approach to the image, with vibrant colors and powerful brushstrokes that enhanced their energy.
