The artist:

He was born in Palermo in 1922, a contemporary of that generation of Sicilian artists who lived through the disasters of war, the collapse of fascism and the Liberation.
Having arrived in Aosta in 1951 to teach art subjects, he then lived in Turin and finally from 1958 in Milan, where he frequented Quasimodo and Vittorio Fagone, De Grada and Mario De Micheli, and where he taught and established himself.

Between news and memory, Bardi's painting for over sixty years has gone through several seasons (some more "realistic", some more "baroque") without ever abandoning itself to the oscillations of taste, always absorbed in his true interior motives. In all of them, when more melancholic or existentialist, when more turgidly and sensually figurative, the sonorous and solar splendor of his Sicily.

In all of them, still, his own way, his own style always recognizable, even in the smallest sketch or pencil drawing, his own synthesis, never contracted or merely summarizing the image sign, between news and memory, between story and contemplation, where social ideas and civil criticism, especially active in the “existential realist” paintings of the 50s and 60s, react and combine with the ruined curls of a crumbling Palermo, with the prickly luxuriance of the prickly pear, with a light so sharp and lucid that it can only be looked at through the fresh crack of the burning shutter

Mario Bardi, with his life and his work, has proposed to us the taste, even refined, of looking at painting not only as a reality of man, but also as a quality of his conscience.

The sensual charm of his images, the frank poetic feeling that runs through them come, precisely, from here, from the substantial truth of his acute way of looking at the world.
