The artist:
Piero Gauli (Milan, June 6, 1916 - Milan, January 4, 2012) was an Italian painter and set designer, known for his adherence to the artistic movement "Corrente", characterized by an expressionist language influenced by Northern European masters such as Oskar Kokoschka, and for an artistic production that ranges from painting to ceramics, with a strong expressionist imprint. His art is distinguished by hollow and colorful figures, evoking an intense expressiveness and a profound reflection on the human condition.
During the Second World War, Gauli was sent to the Russian front in 1942 and subsequently interned in the Polish concentration camp of Cholmin. During this period he made numerous drawings that bear witness to the war experience, reflecting an acute sensitivity towards human suffering.
In 1948 he participated in the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial and in the 1960s in the International Exhibitions in Paris, New York and Munich.
Gauli's works are present in numerous public and private collections, testimonies of a rich and varied artistic path, which has been able to combine personal experience with a universal vision of art.
