The artist:
Trento Longaretti (1916-2017) was an Italian painter known for his long career and his commitment to representing themes related to the human condition, with particular attention to the humble and the marginalized. Born in Treviglio (Bergamo), Longaretti studied at the Brera Academy and was a student of Aldo Carpi for five years together with Piero Maccaferri, Bruno Cassinari, Ennio Morlotti, Arturo Martini, Aldo Bergolli and Ibrahim Kodra and entered the Italian figurative tradition, while developing a personal language imbued with lyricism and spirituality.
Why does he represent the humble?
Longaretti was deeply influenced by humanistic and Christian values, which led him to focus on themes such as fragility, dignity and the condition of the last. The humble, the poor, migrants, pilgrims and mothers with children are recurring subjects in his works. For the artist, these figures embody not only a social reality, but also universal symbols of the struggle for survival, solidarity and hope. The choice to represent the humble also comes from an intense reflection on the human condition and the spiritual essence of existence. His works do not denounce directly, but evoke empathy and introspection, with a pictorial style that combines formal simplicity and expressive intensity.
